What is Mead?

Mead is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey and water, with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. The defining characteristics of mead is that the majority of beverage's fermentation sugar is derived from honey.

Mead has been made by our ancestors since 7,000 BC and can be found in the history of many countries such as Italy, China, Ethiopia and Greece. The mention of mead can be found in many ancient literature and song. Due to heavy taxation and the discovery of other fermentation processes, mead has been a "lost art" of the last few centuries.

There are many varieties of mead that can be made depending on the source of honey, fruit, spices and yeast that is mixed together.

In the spirit of local tradition, Maria's has brought to you a Blueberry Melomel that pairs well with any food and will leave you reminiscing of fresh blueberries.

We are also introducing a Cyser style mead which is made with the perfect mixture of local apple cider and honey. This mead pairs well with your favorite slice of Maria's pizza.

Order a bottle to share with your friends tonight or get a glass from our chilled gravity keg. You will NOT be disappointed.

Our mead is: Gluten free, made with local honey, has all natural flavors, made with real local fruit, no sulfites added, no yeast nutrients added, has been aged 9-12 months, Made in Bangor.
